GROUP RESEARCH:

  • Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) surveillance of sheep and cattle focuses upon tracking the molecular evolution of FMDV endemic to Palestine, and the detection of fresh incursions.
  • Molecular epidemiology and control of contagious ecthyma (CE) infections in sheep.  CE is caused by orf virus, which is a member of the parapoxvirus genus. We are studying the distribution and spread of disease and are looking at the determinants of virulence in in-vitro laboratory studies.
  • Avian virus diagnostics and prevention is of vital importance to the Palestinian poultry industry. We have recently initiated lines of research to develop vaccine matching and efficacy tests, as well as improved diagnostic capabilities for avian virus with a starting focus upon Newcastle disease virus.
  • Food safety of animal products. Applied microbiology projects including the thermal inactivation kinetics for bacterial infections of local food products are areas of interest
  • Animal cell culture technology developments in the field of hydrogel substrates and primary culture. Our interest in animal cell cult ure supports the veterinary virology we undertake, and also serves as a platform to develop services of potential therapeutic value.
